Paramotor: Do you need a paramotor license to fly?

Before we dive into discovering the need to get a paramotor license for flying, let’s look objectively at what a paramotor is.

It is a paraglider infused with the steering and motor, also known as ultralight. It’s a fixed-wing aircraft and extremely lightweight. If you do a little research on paramotor laws, you may come across the section of ultralights.

United States Paramotor License: What are the Laws?

European Union is famous for paramotoring; still, the demand is rising in the United States as well. Let’s look at American law regarding power paragliding and paramotoring.

The United States doesn’t ask you to be a certified pilot if you wish to paramotor by law. It is a self-regulated sport. The only thing the US law suggests is to have proper training before you get on with it.

Anyhow non-participants get more attention from (FAA) Federal Aviation Administration than the regular participants. This is because they are at higher risk of injuring themselves as they have no practice. Training is not compulsory in this case, but it is essential for your safety.

A United States citizen should go to the website (USPPA) the United States power paragliding association to learn about the rules government has assigned for the sports in America. However, you will see ‘ultralights’ in the name of paramotors, so look at the regulations associated with ultralights.

UK Paramotor License: What are the Laws?

United States law is very similar to the United Kingdom in the case of paramotoring. It is an unlicensed thrill in the UK.

However, there are few regulations to follow in the United States for paramotoring. It is necessary to undertake an air navigation order to learn the rules of air better. Although this forecast is are not always destined to be accurate. Here is a list of schools that you can join for your paramotoring training.

Whereas in the UK, the law suggests you examine the weather before you pull out an adventure like this. Checking up on whether to know if it is safe to fly is better than heading out in an unfavorable climate.

Canada Paramotor License: What are the Laws?

Paramotoring laws of the UK and the US differ significantly from that in Canada. Transport Canada (TC) regulates paramotoring in Canada. You must get a permit from TC, permanent or temporary if you want to fly a paramotor. And if you are a citizen of Canada, apply for a continuing permit.

The proper way to get that done is to start with your training. It will be your instructor’s job to notify TC about your progress once you complete the training successfully. Then TC will conduct an exam of 80 questions, especially for you. You get 3 hours to pass the paper, and the minimum percentage to qualify is 60%. You will have the permit to paramotor once you pass.

After this, there are some additional things you need to follow before you paramotor in Canada.

The most important thing is to make registration with TC about your paramotoring activity. You need to target with your medical certificate and fill out the necessary information in the form. Having aeronautical qualifications’ restricted operator certificate is a bonus. To get this certificate, you must go to industry Canada.

Importance of Aviation Laws

These regulations and rules may look pointless at times, after all, flying in the sky in a paramotor don’t seem a big deal to many people. But not following these rules can be your biggest mistake. These are specially made for your safety when you are paramotoring. The laws are necessary to maintain efficiency safety and fairness among the industry.

You will witness a few people who do not obey these regulations or even abuse these laws. Such behaviour projects serious threat within the community and causes many troubles. Reckless behaviour like this can always put people at risk or endanger their lives.

Launching and Landing

Launching or landing a paramour is a cumbersome process in itself, and you cannot do it just anywhere on the ground. You need to decide a plain field using your common sense where it will be safe to land.

The rules are different for each country; still, it is always preferred to launch in a field. You just need a plain area having plenty of space and permission to land there.

Remember to land 1000 meters away from an event that involves a thousand people minimum.

Paramotor License: Is There an Age Requirement?

It depends on the age requirement set by the training schools of the UK and the US. People who are less than 14 don’t usually get training for paramotor training schools.

Whereas in Canada, if you are 16 years old, you can apply to Transport Canada for your permit.
